I, among many I'm sure, was very, very sorry to see this on the RTE Radio 1 site.
God rest you, Frank.

Singer Frank Harte dies aged 72

27 June 2005 19:51
The renowned Dublin singer and record maker Frank Harte has died at the age of 72.

Born in Chapelizod, he was well known for his rendition of songs and produced a book on 'Dublin Street Songs'.

Mr Harte, a retired architect, was also a great collector of songs, from Dublin and Northern Ireland.

He also has a string of recordings to his name, most notably 'Through Dublin City', 'Daybreak', 'A Candle End' and his most recent production about the famine entitled 'Great Hunger'.

Mr Harte had a particular fondness for the late 18th Century French leader Napoleon Bonaparte, and wrote a number of songs about him.

Just heard the news.

Those who knew Frank will realise what a treasure he was. Holder of a vast repertoire of songs and their backgrounds, he shared that wealth with a generosity of spirit that not many achieve, in my experience. As a result, he inspired a whole generation of singers to "stand up there and sing the story" - including myself.

My first encounter with Frank´s recordings was way back in the early seventies. I was visiting an old student colleague of mine in Einhoven in Holland, of all places. He played two LP´s (remember them?) which had a huge impact on me. One was the Watersons "Frost and Fire"´- the other was Frank´s "Through Dublin City". On one level my reaction was "Jeez! If he can get way with singing like that, sure I´ll have a go!". More accurately, of course, I immediately recognised Frank´s ability to get to the heart (sorry, Frank!) of a song - and fire that heart right back out to the listener.

I´m so sad to be sitting here in Granada, unable to pay proper respects to a friend and a man I´ve admired for so many years. The post-burial session will be something else!

Regards

Frank was a rare and fine man. I have fond memories of many evenings on the singers' porch at Augusta sharing songs with Frank and many others. Frank was always encouraging to even the most dodgy singers.

We have lost a giant.

Sad news, indeed. I had the fortune to meet Frank in 1982 at the Willie Clancey week and heard him sing at numerous festivals and sessions after that. A powerful, inspiring singer. I owe several songs in my repertoir--as well as a whole lot of inspiration--to him.

May the sod rest lightly....

This is really sad news. Frank was one of a kind - intelligent, witty, and a great singer. And such a wealth of songs. He was a one-man national archive.

The Napoleon ballads double CD album is a wonderful piece of work. Mind you, the first track is so good that I have found myself hitting the repeat button and not hearing the rest of it.

It is mentioned earlier that he was born in Chapelizod. It's true that he lived there for many years there but I believe he was originally from Galway. However, he was fond of the song 'The Bold Belfast Shoemaker' because it was the only song he knew that mentioned Chapelizod. And he was great at Dublin street songs - the only singer I knew who could make 'Molly Malone' sound like a good song.

This is such a great loss.

That's a sad and big loss. I wanted so much to see and hear him next time in Dublin. I do hope that all his song collecting work does not get lost with him.

The older he got the better he was. I remember my reactions to his early three LPs being similar to Martins. But on his recent CDs he's got a great voice.

He was a man who could take a song that had been sung to death by everyone else and sing it in a way to make you listen and rediscover the beauty of such a song.

A great man has left.

"worked a song from the inside" is exactly it. As he used to say, the hope was always that someone would come up to you after a song and say - "That was a fine song!" not "Well sung" or "Well done, Frank". The realisation of YOUR contribution should come more slowly.

Just came across this note from Tom Munnelly, quoted from an IR-Trad posting:
__________________________________________________
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but that remarkable walking archive of traditional song and the most generous man who ever existed when it came to passing on songs, Frank Harte, was found by his daughter Orla in his Chapelizod home this afternoon slumped at the computer. Apparently a heart attack. No details of funeral yet.

Typical Frank, I suspect, - probably still sorting and learning songs to the end.

Frank is a National Treasure, one of the nicest, most generous artists that I have met, reknown for his enthusiasm and his fine sense of humour. He will be a tremendous loss to the singing tradition but he has left a unrivaled opus.

Any word concerning the arrangments for his funeral?

Now that is a real loss to us all. He was a lovely man, so wide awake to any song in earshot. He'd hear a snatch of something he hadn't heard before, and be off after it like a terrier.

I met him at the National a few years back, and at the Fleadh Ceoil in Clonmel a couple of times, and talked on the phone once or twice. But any time our paths crossed, it was as if we'd known each other all our lives.

"Are you still singing such and such a song?" he'd say - and given the number of songs and singers he must have had rattling around in his head, remembering that kind of thing is pretty amazing.

Seventy two? I'd never have put him anywhere near that. I thought there had a good many years of him to come, and chances to meet again.

It is indeed a shock to hear of his passing.

I had the great good fortune to spend a solid week with himself, two summers in a row at Elkins in 1995 and 1996. He was always generous with the songs and all the craic that went with them. He loved the way the best Irish musicians were so accessible to students of Irish music, and he loved being part of the flow between the generations. And he loved to pitch himself into a song, as loud and as high as he could sing them.

Frank, myself and Molly Andrews had a memorable 5 hour session on the Friday night in 1996, sitting on the porch of one of the dorms and trading songs amongst ourselves and with whoever wandered by, drinking some peculiar mixture of brandy and port that Frank was fond of and thought fortifying. It was a rare night, and one I treasure.

God bless you, Frank, you old rascal. You are loved by many and will be missed.

Frank's daughter Sinead Harte lives outside DC - I'm sure condolences would be welcome. 4819 Derussey Pkway, Chevy Chase MD 20815

I am so sorry to hear of Frank's death. I loved learning songs from his old LPs, as his singing style put the song and its story up front. I wish that I could have attended the Augusta Festivals at which he taught, as Melissa commented about above. He was truly an inspiration to unaccompanied singers, for his vast repertoire, depth of knowledge about the songs and for his delight and generosity in sharing his songs with other people.

My two favorite memories of him are from the late, lamented Washington (DC) Irish Festival. One was a workshop that featured him and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and Karan Casey singing songs they learned from Frank, with exquisite songs and stories from all three. Frank was just beaming, being flanked by two such attractive young women (although Ms. Casey was in her purple hair phase...) with such gorgeous voices.

The other was from the same festival, a set he did at the pseudo-Pub Stage. At the end of his set, he brought up his grand-daughter, sat her on his lap, and the two of them sang Molly Malone together, as wonderful an illustration of passing along the music as you'll ever see.

He leaves a big hole in the scope of Irish music. Surely St. Peter will have a place in heaven for such a fine singer...

I passed my brother and cousin:
They read in their books of prayer;
I read in my book of songs
I bought at the Sligo fair.

When we come at the end of time,
To Peter sitting in state,
He will smile on the three old spirits,
But call me first through the gate

Rest you merry, Frank.

Frank was one of God's own great characters: part artist, part scholar and part barroom kibitzer. He could be a terrible tease but he doted on women, virtually all women of virtually any age.

I bought his first two Topic LPs at Dobell's or Collet's or the Folk Shop at Cecil Sharp House just when they came out. I first was introduced to Frank by Paul Brady at the 10th anniversary of the Tradition Club in Dublin and I sat across the room from him that night. For whatever reason, he was holding someone else's concertina case and I thought for a few years afterwards that he played the instrument.

We met in Mick Moloney's backyard sometime in the late 70s and we spent the next day marching around Philadelphia looking for an exotic computer part in 95F weather with about the same figure on the humidity index. Our mutual ordeal made us fast friends.

Frank's first or second gig in the U.S. was at The Eagle Tavern in NYC about 25 years ago. He was really unknown here then so we decided to try a new format without sound system in which he and I would do a few songs and then members of the audience would do a few songs and then pass the ball would pass back to Frank. I remember he found it very amusing that the audience would be paying to hear themselves sing.

Anytime I was looking for a "different" song for a recording, Frank was quick to help and he never suggested crappy songs. In fact, he later recorded three of the songs he gave me himself including "The Nightingale." As we know, Frank gave songs to many well known singers but he also gave many songs to many unknown singers and I very much doubt that he spent any less time with the latter than with the former.

It was Frank who first took me to the Goilin and who harped at me to go up to Inishowen. That first year, he spent just about the whole weekend with me and introduced me to virtually everyone there. When I think of the great friendships that have resulted from those two connections, I realize the great debt I owe him.

Like all the people who truly love folk songs and take the time to seek them out, Frank heard thousands of songs in his life. Possessor of an exceptional memory, a large number of the songs he heard stuck with him. He had great taste too.

I am not fully able to comprehend that he's dead yet, that I will never again hear him take the opposite side of an argument just to have a bit of fun, that he will never look at me again with a devilish eye before singing a song he knew I could never have heard before, that I will never again return home to find my phone answering machine clogged with messages from him, that I will never again feel his elbow in my side as he strode past me to fuss over my wife, that I will never again hear him sing the ballad about the gates that swung open by themselves.

As long as Frank was around singing somewhere you knew all was right with the world. He carried the mantle for us all. I wonder who'll take it up now. He was the Tailor Ban.... "Twas oft times I drank with this tailor, at market and fair each time. On most days there'd nar be a failure, sure we thought that the old game was fine. He used to be act out capers and singing his queer rawchans And the landlady asking for payment and she cursing the Tailor Ban." Good Luck, Frank. Davey.

the programme was well worth listening to, taken from a concert/talk given by Frank himself - rather different setting from the singing sessions I was accustomed to encountering him at (and I also first heard/heard of Frank by picking up an LP of his when I was a teenager, late 1960s)

I heard about 40 minutes of it, up to his song about the Spanish Lady (Wheel of Fortune)but missed some as I went to see a lovely film about about a clarinet player whose parents are both deaf and can't understand her love of music. So if anyone has a tape of the programme please p-mail Felipa (NOT Philippa). Audial is blocked on this computer so I haven't searched to see if Lyric FM has any internet connection.

Sad sad news. Only just read of this on another site, as I'm way from home.
Such a lyrical, eloquent posting from Dan that I can see Frank as I read it.

I only saw Frank Harte twice: at Forkhill and then at Innishowen. I still treasure a few things of those times.
There was his talk on the Napoleonic CD at Forkhill where to illustrate the "broken token" moment of unmasking the male hero, he put his hand over his face, pulling it away going "ha ha, it's me!" I still think of it every time I hear a broken token song...but it'll be a bit bitter sweet now.
At the same weekend, he sung two songs, "Hans Beimler" and "She is like a Swallow", I loved one and wanted to learn it, Susan, my wife wanted to learn the other.
He took time to sit and give two fledgling Scots singers these songs and then, and this was the true measure of the man to me, when he realised our minisdisc bateries had died, he recorded them at home and passed them to Geordie McIntyre to pass on to us...

My other treasured memory was from Innishowen a few years ago, no idea which one, they tend to run together into one glorious memory; but Frank was there in the bar, some of us were in the foyer singing at about 2 or 3am. Susan sung "The Green Linnet" and someone tried to find Frank in the bar to drag him out to listen. It's not intended to sound conceited, it's just impossible to convey the pride I felt that someone would think her version of the song worth the great man hearing...

I'll be toasting the man and singing "Hans Beimler" in his memory.

Andymac

the tv feature on Frank Harte from the series "'Sé mo laoch" is being repeated this week on TG4 (Teilifis na Gaeilge, Irish tv station). I think it's on tomorrow night (I'd better check the tv pages myself in case it's tonight)

I just learned today of my cousin Frank's passing. Thank you to everyone who posted. It made me enjoy my memories of Frank all over again. His father, Peter, was the youngest brother of my grandfather, Thomas. I will never forget the instantaneous hospitality he extended to me when I was a homesick college student in Europe in the summer of 1978.

I never met Frank in person but I was in email contact with him last year. He was very helpful and generous with his knowledge.

I knew Frank from the many years that he taught at Irish Week at the Augusta Heritage Arts Center at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, WV. I spent many evenings on the porch of Halliehurst Mansion with him singing into the wee, wee hours of the night/morning.

It was a privilege and an honour to know such a larger-than-life and yet very humble man who sang songs of the struggle of the common man. He was a towering figure in the world of songs, one we always went to when we needed to learn new ones. His knowledge of songs and history was encyclopaedic, one never tired of hearing him explain how songs and Irish history were so indelibly linked.

This past week, at Irish Week at Augusta, we paid tribute to our late friend and mentor. It was bittersweet, both funny and sad, with songs sung and music played that he loved. Tears were shed, and we left Frank's chair on the porch empty in tribute to him at the evening "seisiúns". We did, however, very much feel his spirit among us, and so, all of us who knew him, who learned songs from him, are his legacy. It is up to us to keep singing those songs and to share them with others, as he very much would have wanted us to do.

I loved this man, regarded him as a mentor, a friend and something of a musical father figure. I'll deeply miss him, but two songs I have written have a bit of Frank in them, and so I carry him on in what I am doing. Frank, you were one of a kind. I'm grateful to have gotten to know you over the space of so many years. Thanks for the songs, the memories, the stories, the laughter, the tears, the "craic".

It was a rare night, and one I treasure.

oh yes, a rare night indeed in elkins, west virginia,
and one that frank himself held very dear and near.
he spoke of it often.

i spent one last delightful evening with him in the fall of 2003.
we sang together at the wonderful goilin club in dublin and
afterward sat up in his cozy cottage by the liffey until 4am,
sharing songs and good craic, sipping and savoring the afore mentioned concoction he favored...
i'd brought along a little gift of 'napoleon' brandy.
after a very few hours sleep he came into the kitchen,
happy to find me putting the kettle on.
he then commenced into fixing us a full irish fry.

last time we spoke was april, 2005.
he encouraged me to do all i could to enjoy every minute of life.
this was a man who knew what he was talking (and singing) about.

much love to you in the great beyond, dear frank
